Splendid fish belonging to the family of cichlids, variety breeding of Symphysodon Aequifasciatus var. blue, proviente originally from the center of the South American continent: the basin of the Amazon, specifically from Rio Manacapuro, Rio Purus, Rio Jari, Rio Urubo and others.
Body almost circular, very flattened, disk-shaped, fins dorsal, caudal and anal that unite and, at times, overlap; the color of the plumage is brown with gold highlights, black vertical stripes are absent or barely noticeable; on the whole body is a verminatura intense cobalt blue, particularly evident on the head and fins.
Pacific shy with other kinds of fish and the people, but aggressive and territorial with others: males often quarrel among themselves and sometimes the females; in an aquarium should live in small herds, 6/8 juvenile or an adult couple with schools of small tetras.
It needs a very large tub, with very hot water, treated beforehand with ion exchange resins to lower the hardness and the pH to extreme values, very well filtered, possibly through the peat granules, a few large plants, resistant, leafy wide, type Anubias, Spatyphyllum, Syngonium.
Extremely sensitive to water features, especially the concentration of phosphates and nitrates, therefore requires frequent partial water changes, additions of trace elements and vitamins.
Carnivorous in nature, in a fish aquarium is very demanding for those on nutrition, in addition to live food almost exclusively eats brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms, rarely accept dry feed granules, although specifically designed for Discus
Very difficult the reproduction of the S. in the aquarium, first of all requires perfect conditions as regards the values of the tank water, also a key feature of farming Discus consists in the fact that the first nourishment of the larvae, in their early days of life, it is represented by the mucus that covers the body of both parents; only when the fry have reached a diameter of about 10/15 mm. accustoming can be weaned to artificial feed.
Absolutely not recommended for the beginner, it is suitable only for those who have a lot of experience and a lot of time to devote to the care and maintenance of the aquarium.
