It is NOT a good tank companion with shrimp.
It is an active, boisterous fish, and although it is generally peaceful, it will intimidate shy fish.
As with all fish, it will eat any fish it can fit in its mouth, and equally be eaten by any fish large enough to fit it in their mouths. This should be taken into account when choosing tank companions. They can swallow gravel or finer substrates. This should be taken into account when choosing substrates.
Minimum tank size is 4 ftx2x2 for one adult, larger if there are other fish.
Could be kept in a biotype with driftwood, stones, plants and lots of tannins. Tanks should be low light and/or have floating or overhanging vegetation. They are likely to uproot planted vegetation, and eat more delicate plants. Anubias on driftwood may be possible, as it has a bitter taste.
Oscars also tend to be difficult to manage in terms of attacking equipment in the tank, so if it cannot be kept externally, it should be provided with a guard.
